It’s that time of year again…When it comes to Valentine’s you either love it or hate it and if you’re going to love it – you might as well go big or go home. So what could be more romantic than a trip away?
Where to go? What to do? So far you only know who you’re going with – one out of three is always a good start! So here’s our carefully curated selection of romantic destinations ideal for the best valentine’s getaway (or if you’re feeling super spontaneous, a romantic getaway any other time of the year)!
Bath, UK
Since Bath has been voted the UK’s most romantic destination, we thought we’d start there! This historic city was once home to Jane Austen, whose books oozed romance and you can easily see how the city inspired the author! But what makes this place truly romantic is Bath’s spa heritage. Why not head to the Thermae Bath Spa and cuddle up in the rooftop pool while you enjoy the gorgeous city views?
Paris, France
It’s an old classic but one that rarely disappoints! While it may be cliché, this is truly a city of love. With Paris being the home of over 100 Michelin starred restaurants, it is a perfect opportunity to splurge on a gourmet meal. Of course, not forgetting that climbing the light-spangled Eiffel Tower is a must on Valentine’s Day, enjoying sweeping views of Europe’s most romantic city.
Rome, Italy
With its cobbled piazzas, al fresco trattorias and time-weathered Baroque churches, Rome feels like a film set built especially for your very own Italian La La Land (singing is an optional extra). You may not be allowed to wade barefoot into the Trevi Fountain like Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita, but there is a number of other scenic backdrops for dalliance and declarations.
Venice, Italy
There’s no argument about it, Venice is up there with Paris for being one of the most romantic cities in Europe. From floating around the lagoon being serenaded by a Gondolier, to getting lost in the laneways on Venice Island and finding tiny cafe’s that have the best antipasto plates and wine you could ever dream of! Every inch of Venice oozes romance so you could even get down on one knee in St Mark’s Square!
Budapest, Hungary
Considerably less touristy than its sister city Prague, Budapest is made for couples! Cruise along the Danube at night for a picturesque view of the city, lit up by thousands of lights. As well as the iconic Széchenyi Baths and beautiful Gellért Spa, Budapest also features authentic Turkish baths and hammams, leftover from the Ottoman occupation of the city hundreds of years ago. Or take a gentle stroll along the boulevards and promenades.
Santorini, Greece
The Greek islands have been the backdrop for many a film, with Santorini being the classic choice for star-crossed lovers. The jaw-dropping Santorini is ranked as one of the most romantic places in the world, with spectacular turquoise sea views and whitewashed cave houses that are backed by blue-domed churches that spill down the rim of an ancient volcanic crater.
Florence, Italy
As one of Italy’s most popular wedding destinations (even Kim and Kanye tied the knot here), Florence is a must see Renaissance gem! If you want a classical twist on a couples city break, Florence will tick all the right boxes. And don’t even get us started on the cuisine… Whether it’s traditional steaks, delicate antipasti or old-school gelato, the locals really do know how to eat well.
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Why not experience sleeping on soft reindeer skins in -5⁰ C, surrounded by inspiring art made of ice and snow and enjoy the tranquility and the quiet arctic surroundings? Spend a sub-zero Valentine’s Day at the Ice Hotel, dog sledding and steaming in your private sauna. There’s even a licensed ice chapel for the ultimate white wedding!
Cotswolds, UK
Things don’t get much quainter than the Cotswolds, a beautiful region in the west of England where every village looks like it was plucked from the cover of a biscuit tin. The distinct architecture and lush valleys really are a feast for the eyes. You could even do a quick day trip to the romantic city of Bath should you fancy mixing things up a little.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik has attracted many famous couples who have enjoyed the romantic ambiance the walled city offers: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Sophia Loren and Carl Ponti, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas and Beyonce and Jay Z to name a few. Plus, Dubrovnik is full of gorgeous architecture such as Fort Lovrijenac, which doubles as the Red Keep in King’s Landing in the Game of Thrones series.
