What To Watch this Christmas – 2018

As the year comes to a close, it’s worth noting that we’ve had a great year in film, with the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mission Impossible and Mamma Mia 2!

The trees are up, the radios are banging out the Xmas jams all day long and we might even get a bit of snow! All we’re waiting for now is the arrival of the big man in the red suit!

So, whether you are looking to get a mega dose of the holiday spirit or just need a quick escape from family time, gift shopping, or any other slightly annoying seasonal activity. We’ve got you covered with enough Christmas movies and TV specials, to occupy you from now until the New Year.

Aquaman – 14th December

DC Comics’ lord of the seas is getting his own solo feature in Aquaman. Jason Momoa will reprise his iconic superhero role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Aquaman follows Arthur Curry, as he is forced to choose between his loyalties to the surface world and his royal duties in the undersea kingdom of Atlantis, which has become increasingly hostile to the human race polluting the oceans.

Mary Poppins Returns – 21st December

It’s been a whopping 53 years since the Mary Poppins descended onto our screens via umbrella. Now she’s back to visit the all too grown-up Banks children in a musical reboot by Disney.

Featuring some of the greats including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and of course Dick Van Dyke (reprising as Mr Dawes Jr) – this one is sure to put a spring in your step this Christmas.

Bumblebee –Boxing Day (26th Dec)

This infamous yellow Transformer get’s his own and long-awaited spin-off! Starring Hailee Steinfeld, this is origin story takes place in the 1980’s and deals with the discovery of Bumblebee, on a Californian trash heap. For added nostalgic appeal, Bumblebee has been reworked in his original Generation One guise of a VW Beetle.

Holmes and Watson – Boxing Day (26th Dec)

Iconic comedy duo Will Ferrell and John C.Reilly return to our screens once more, in a side-splitting comedic take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s infamous Sherlock Holmes stories. With Ferrell playing the renowned detective and Reilly as his trusted sidekick this is sure to be a comical masterpiece.

Love Actually

Although this film epic is now 14 years old, we can’t make a ‘What to Watch this Christmas’ without including it! Despite the waves of haters, Love Actually might be one of the most perfect holiday movies about love and relationships.

With its star-studded cross-over story-lines that go through all the emotions of the holiday season from heartbreak to joy, it’s a movie that’s easy to adore.

Call the Midwife – Christmas Day (25th Dec)

Good news, series eight is on its way! Call the Midwife will return with a festive special, followed by eight more episodes in the New Year. Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes (Prof Pomona Sprout) is set to join the cast of Call the Midwife for this year’s Christmas special.

The show will explore the stories of child refugees in the UK, with Miriam taking on the role of forthright Sister Mildred. Her character will arrive unexpectedly at Nonnatus House with four Chinese orphans who fled China and have been adopted in the UK as part of the World Refugee Project.

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special – Christmas Day (25th Dec)

The Strictly Christmas Special’s back! Six celebrities will be dancing to take the festive dancing trophy, with professionals old and new to the yuletide special taking to the stage. The line up consists of Caroline Flack, Ann Widdecombe, Anita Rani, Aston Merrygold, Jake Wood and Michael Vaughan!

Mrs Brown’s Boys – Christmas Day (25th Dec)

Comedy sensation Mrs Brown’s Boys returns with two brand new and hilarious specials for Christmas 2018. Agnes and family will be bringing the Christmas spirit in a way that only they know how! Always one to put a smile on our faces, Agnes will make sure this is one Christmas special we’ll never forget.

Doctor Who – New Year’s Day (1st Jan)

It’s all change this year, as the traditional Christmas Day episode will instead air on New Year’s Day. Actress Jodie Whittaker will star in a special episode over the festive period as the 13th Time Lord, joined by her trusty companions Graham, Yasmin and Ryan. Jodie made her debut as the new Doctor in last year’s Christmas episode, and we can expect more drama again this year.

While we wait for the big man in the red suit, there’s no better thing to do than lie by the fireplace and watch a good, old-fashioned Christmas film or some of the latest TV!
