What To Watch this Christmas

As the year comes to a close, it’s worth noting that we’ve had a great year in film, with the release of Rocketman, Detective Pikachu, Avengers: EndgameThe Lion King and Downton Abbey!

The trees are up, the radios are banging out the Christmas jams all day long and we might even get a bit of snow! All we’re waiting for now is the arrival of the big man in the red suit!

So, whether you are looking to get a mega dose of the holiday spirit or just need a quick escape from family time, gift shopping, or any other slightly annoying seasonal activity. We’ve got you covered with enough Christmas movies and TV specials, to occupy you from now until the New Year.

Jumanji: The Next Level – 11th December

A sequel no-one knew they wanted – the gang is back and the game has changed! The players (Kevin Hart, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Karen Gillan and Jack Black) will brave parts unknown and unexplored in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game!

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – 19th December

A year after the unforgettable events of The Last Jedi, the remnants of the Resistance face the First Order once again! Whilst Rey’s journey continues, the Skywalker saga is brought to a definitive end! Disney CEO Bob Iger has recently said that the Star Wars franchise will go on “hiatus”  after this blockbuster – so this isn’t one to miss!

Cats – 20th December

As one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most successful musicals, it was only a matter of time before Cat’s was produced for the big screen! With an extraordinary cast of Hollywood and music stars, including Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen – we’re expecting great things!

Little Women –  26th December

A brand spanking new Little Women adaptation is on the way and with a starrier cast than ever! Emma Watson,  Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep and Timothée Chalamet are just a few of the epic actors who’ll be bringing this story to life! Not forgetting that it’s directed and adapted by the amazing Greta Gerwig, more recently known for her work on Lady Bird!

Love Actually

Although this film epic is now 14 years old, we can’t make a ‘What to Watch this Christmas’ without including it! Despite the waves of haters, Love Actually might be one of the most perfect holiday movies about love and relationships.

With its star-studded cross-over story-lines that go through all the emotions of the holiday season from heartbreak to joy, it’s a movie that’s easy to adore.

A Christmas Carol – 22nd Dec

Adapted by Peaky Blinders and Taboo writer Steven Knight, the three-part saga will air during the Christmas Period! This classic will feature big names such as Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Andy Serkis, Stephen Graham and Charlotte Riley!

Call the Midwife – Christmas Day (25th Dec)

The countdown has begun to the Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas Special! So here’s what we know – Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) decides to take the gang to the Outer Hebrides to help out! It’s the first time since the 2016 Christmas adventure to South Africa, that they’ve been out of town!

Gavin and Stacey – Christmas Day (25th Dec)

Whilst a few of the details still need to be ironed out, one thing’s for certain, we’re extremely excited for the Christmas special! The episode marks a return to Barry Island for the first time in 10 years!

The new episode has of course been co-written by the legendary James Corden and Ruth Jones, and will pick off from where the previous finale left off with Stacey and Ness pregnant.

GBBO – Christmas Day (25th Dec) and New Year’s Day (1st Jan)

You’re in luck! There are not one but two GBBO Christmas specials this year! First up we have the Great Christmas Bake Off, featuring old favourites Tom and Yan from 2017 and Briony and Terry from 2018, as they battle to be crowned Christmas Star Baker!

But that’s not all! Prepare yourself for the greatest crossover in TV history because the Derry Girls cast are doing GBBO…yes, really! Oh and of course, the usual suspects will be back in the tent too, with Noel and Sandi presenting and Paul and Prue casting their ever critical eyes!

Doctor Who – New Year’s Day (1st Jan)

It wouldn’t be a proper New Year’s celebration without a new Doctor Who series kick off, so you’ll be pleased to see the launch of the 12th series with Jodie Whittaker back in the lead role, alongside Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole.

Miranda: My Such Fun Celebration – New Year’s Day (1st Jan)

To mark 10 years since she first galloped onto our screens, the much-loved Miranda will reunite with the cast for a one-hour special! We don’t have a date for this one yet but keep your eyes peeled for updates!

While we wait for the big man in the red suit, there’s no better thing to do than lie by the fireplace and watch a good, old-fashioned Christmas film or some of the latest TV!
